Besides the fascinating films of Miyazaki Hayao, I have rarely watched Japanese animation during the past six years or so. However, during that time period I did happen to look a film called Perfect Blue. Unlike great anime with their bug-eyed, florescent haired characters, Perfect Blue was enthralling in a more realistic style and like the challenging films of Oshii Mamoru it delved into questions of the mind, image, and reality. Since the release of Perfect Blue, Kon Satoshi also directed Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and the television series Paranoia Agent none of which I have seen myself, but of which I have heard superb things from my anime watching friends. I was attracted to the film Paprika when I saw some of the colorfully vibrant film stills and heard a couple of Hirasawa Susumu’s pulsating electric tracks from its soundtrack. This past weekend I watched the film twice and I am aloof trying to unravel some of the threads of view that it has left in my brain.

Paprika opens in…a circus. Detective Konakawa, apparently on an undercover mission suddenly finds himself within a cage after the emcee, supposedly a friend, points. He then falls through the floor into notice film, also a Tarzan film, and also a gangster film. We then perceive him begin up a door to ogle a body falling after it has been shot and the culprit escaping. Konakawa then wakes up next to a lithe, red-headed girl. Using a plan called a DC mini which allows an individual to enter another’s dreams to accumulate what is ailing the “patient.” The girl, called Paprika, is quite experienced at her job and is quite knowledgeable about dreams and the inner psyches of individuals. However, Paprika herself is nothing more than the manifestation of the psyche of Dr. Chiba Atsuko, a very serious woman who is quite dedicated to her profession even if it means doing things a bit under the table. Problems inaugurate when Dr. Tokita, a morbidly obese childlike genius, informs Chiba that three of the DC minis have been stolen. To form matters worse, Dr. Tokita never programmed security codes into the devices to prevent objective anyone from being able to exhaust them. The first evident victim of the DC mini is the fragment chief Shima who suddenly dives out a window when his psyche is invaded by another’s dreams. Chiba goes to sleep in order to allow Paprika to jump into Shima’s dream. There she discovers a very creepy circus led by a mailbox and a refrigerator objective like Shima said before he jumped out the window. She soon discovers that the culprit is Dr. Tokita’s assistant Himuro who is in the guise of a Japanese doll. However, do things truly extinguish with Himuro or is there something considerable deeper at stake?

Like the comics of Shirow Masamune, Paprika delves into the interrogate of science and technology and its relationship to mankind. The Chairman states that dreams should not be invaded by science because they are precious to humans. With the intervention of science this purity is lost and humans lose a principal aspect of themselves. The self and the Internet is also an jabber within this film. People make lives and personas completely different from their accurate selves online. Be it being a jerk on You Tube or creating a fantasy life, individuals allow for their psyches to span in cyberspace. These are fair a couple of questions that the film raises. Sexuality in the being of Dr. Chiba, a broken-down woman, and Paprika, a teenaged girl, also plays a principal role, but I feel as if I need to discover the film a couple more times before I delve into that topic.

With its pulsating soundtrack and wide ranging milieu of colors, Paprika is quite an experience both aurally and visually. Definitely an bewitching film to be watched for those keen in the genre expanding potential of animation, Paprika will definitely spark one’s thinking cap.

It’s no secret amongst fans of lustrous, adult sci-fi that some of the best genre films these days aren’t originating from Hollywood, but rather from the masters of Japanese anime. Films like “Akira ” and “Ghost in the Shell” prove a quality of writing and visual imagination that few “live action” productions (post “Blade Runner”) can touch.

One of the most adventurous anime directors is Satoshi Kon. In previous work like his incredibly dense and ambitious TV miniseries “Paranoia Agent”, and in several feature films, Kon has displayed a flair for coupling complex characterization with a neo-realistic visual style that tends to execute me forget that I’m watching an “anime”. Most of Kon’s work up until this point has drawn on genres that one does not typically associate with anime: adult drama (”Tokyo Godfathers”), film noir (”Perfect Blue”), psychological thriller (”Paranoia Agent”) and character spy (”Millennium Actress”) .

Kon’s latest film, “Paprika” is actually the first of his animes that I would categorize as “sci-fi”… and it’s a doozy.

A team of scientists develops an interface intention called the “DC mini” that facilitates the transference of dreams from one person to another. This “dream machine” is designed primarily for utilize by psychotherapists; it allows them to literally experience a patient’s dreams and consume a closer ogle “under the hood”, if you will. In the unpleasant hands, however, this could potentially become a very risky tool.

As you have likely already guessed, “someone” has hacked into a “DC mini” and started to wreak havoc with people’s minds. One by one, members of the research team are driven to suicidal behavior after the dreams of patients are fed into their subconscious without their knowledge (mighty akin to someone slipping acid into the punch) . Things regain more complicated when these waking dreams open taking sentient gain and originate spreading like a virus, forming a pervasive matrix that threatens to supplant “reality” (whew!) . A homicide detective joins forces with one of the researchers, whose alter-ego, Paprika, is literally a “dream girl”, a sort of super-heroine of the subconscious.

“Mind blowing” doesn’t even initiate to recount this Disney-on-acid/murder mystery/psychological sci fi-horror yarn. It is Kon’s most visually ambitious work to date, with gorgeous exercise of color and imagery (designate my words-this one has “future cult midnight movie” written all over it) .

Kon raises some though-provoking philosophical points (aside from the hoary “what is reality? ” debate) . At one point, Paprika ponders: “Don’t you reflect dreams and the internet are similar? They are both areas where the repressed conscious vents.” I consider Kon is positing that the dream place is the last “sacred station” left for humans; if technology encroaches we will lose our last factual refuge. A must-see for anime and sci-fi fans.

Corman himself doesn’t interact with anyone in a commentary, but does give some tantalizing background at the beginning of each film. He has no pretensions about the work, but tells us exactly what he was trying to do and what he had to go through to conclude it. It’s broad to hear his views on all three films.

My accepted revelation is that Corman first notion of Allison Hayes (the 50 Foot Woman herself) as the lead in the THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH, but after seeing Betsy Jones-Moreland in a play, decided to offer her the role instead.

The main delight here is THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH. The movie itself is a rude budget mishmosh. The glory on this DVD is the commentary by its stars Betsy Jones-Moreland and Antony Carbone. They are joined by Steve Latshaw and Fred Olen Ray. If you are tired of “educated” commentaries that execute films up into things they were never meant to be – listen to the struggles of Moreland and Carbone. All situations were met with impunity. They frankly discuss co-star Edward Wain – who is in reality future Academy-Award winning screenwriter Robert Towne.

The movie is shown in widescreen (as is THE CREATURE FROM THE Terrified SEA) and for the first time in many years in Eastman color.

All the movies are fun (CREATURE has a commentary by Moreland, Carbone, and Latshaw) .

Director-writer Joel M. Rapp does a commentary for the third film, a war movie called BATTLE OF BLOOD ISLAND.

Extras include a photo album that actually shows lobby cards rather than stills, trailers from 11 Corman films, extra scenes filmed for the movies to add time when they were marketed for television a few years later, and individual trailers for the trilogy films.

But if ANY of these titles are familiar to you, or you are enthusiastic in this era of filming, this disc, at a bargain label, will effect a glorious evening’s entertainment!

…after grand searching I finally found THE VERSION…this one!

this IS indeed the colour version and also has the director introducing the film and making of scream commentary from 2 of the actors as well which as a tremendous bonus.

i first saw this film on sci-fi free tv ages aid and then went to amazon.co.uk. to grasp the dvd…of which i bought 2 versions trying to get the colour version [the last one had a spurious description that it was in colour...when that arrived it was a unlit and white version]

this is the only version i have found that is the current colour print and NOT a dusky and white copy like all the other dvd’s out there.

I really can’t set aside my finger on what i really like about this film but i have 3 versions of this at home now so there must be ’something’ special about it! Maybe it’s the thought of the storyline and making the sci’fi

side of it believable great more than “i am yarn” or “the omega man”.

I would say if your going to accept this film then this is the dvd status to opt for over all the overs as it’s the only one in colour and has the making of extras plus 2 more films on the disc as well.

These cartoons were produced in 3 waves:

1964 to 1969 – 62 classic cartoons were produced at this time for theaters. These are the best of the batch and truly creative, some winning awards. In 1969 the Pink Panther was retired and sold to Television with The Inspector for a half-hour Saturday Morning display on NBC. (Remember that classic Pink Panther car shown in the opening titles? )

1971 to 1977 – 30 more cartoons were produced for theaters, bringing the Pink Panther out of theatrical retirement. These were a tiny more hit & miss that the first wave of cartoons. Quiet being produced for theaters, they had more time & money to execute these than the next wave. The same first wave directors worked on this wave. These also got sprinkled into the Saturday Morning TV point to after their theatrical hasten.

1978 to 1980 – 32 cartoons were produced for the 1978 Pink Panther TV demonstrate on a diminutive budget & short time period. Unusual directors were brought in to succor the unusual directors with the increased one year work load. The descend in quality shows on these shorts, you feel like you are watching a Saturday Morning cartoon. These quick made, uncouth budget cartoons were then re-packaged to theaters over three years.

Non of these cartoons were ever shot widescreen, so it is friendly that this DVD will be presented tubby frame.

Some improvements over the previous “Jet Pink” DVD cartoon collection:

All 1960’s cartoons have improved fidelity soundtracks.

PINK PHINK has the current theme song restored on the slay credits.

JET PINK has big portray & sound improvements & new titles are restored.

IN THE PINK OF THE NIGHT has the accurate colors in the opening titles.

Some dreadful notes:

1) A sampling of some of my popular cartoons revealed some to have the TV laugh track: PINK Plot, PSYCHEDELIC PINK, PINK TUBA-DORE. There are probably more. The DVD capabilities should have allowed us to peek each cartoon with either soundtrack as an option! Also a ‘music only’ sound track would have been nice.

2) You will need Jerry Beck’s “Pink Panther Ultimate Guide to the Coolest Cat In Town” book (sold here on Amazon.com) to guide you through the cartoons you want to leer. The title list on this DVD with the generic “Pink ….” titles that these cartoons have will not succor you earn that ‘toon you want to notice.

3) The storage case is poorly designed, disc 2 rests on top of disc 3 & disc 4 rests on top of disc 5. If you want to opinion Discs 3 or 5, you have to catch the top disc off first (glean a obedient non scratching dwelling to set aside it) and then retract the disc you want to peep. Then replace the above disc so that it doesn’t gain damaged.

You may want to invest in some extra cases to build the discs from future hurt.

HINT: Spot DISCS 4 & 5 UNDER DISCS 2 & 3, they have the later 1970’s cartoons that you will probably not stare noteworthy. This map they are out of the design.

I recently saw this film at The Denver Film Festival. It premiered at the Unique York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, and has since been nominated for a Spirit Award in the category of Best Foreign Film. Because it was the first French film in 21 years to get the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes in 2008, I’m predicting it will also be nominated for an Oscar, and it should catch that Oscar. Directed by Laurent Cantet, and based on a semi-autobiographical recent by François Bégaudeau, The Class (Entre les murs, which translates as “Between the Walls”) tells the epic of François Martin, a teacher in a rowdy, inner-city middle school in Paris, which represents a microcosm of the conflicting cultures and attitudes in contemporary France. François Bégaudeau stars in the role of the teacher.

Cantet filmed The Class (http://www.sonyclassics.com/theclass/) in a faux documentary style, using multiple improvised shots of accurate students and exact teachers in a multi-ethnic French class in the 20th arrondissment of Paris. Shot almost entirely in a single classroom, remarkable of the film chronicles François’ verbal confrontations with his French, African, Caribbean, Moroccan, Turkish, and Asian students. While he may not be a perfect teacher, François is highly effective in his pedagogic methods, great like Sidney Poitier’s Label Thackeray character in To Sir, With Esteem. (The films have distinguished in accepted.) In one pivotal scene, he uses the word “pétasse” to narrate two of his street-savvy female students (which translates as “skank”), which prompts a classmate, Soulaymane (Franck Keita), to defend them at the risk of being expelled and sent attend to Mali. In another pivotal scene, one student tells François at the ruin of the school year that she has learned nothing and has understood nothing in his class. The Class is a not only a knowing film, it is a perfect example of why French cinema surpasses nearly everything being produced in Hollywood these days. It plays out as a thought-provoking metaphor of the diverse ethnic mix of 21st-century Paris. Highly recommended.

The first thing director Laurnet Cantet did just when making “The Class (Entre les Murs) ” was asking the author of the novel modern, François Bégaudeau, to write the film’s screenplay. He then went a step further and cast Bégaudeau as the teacher, M. Marin, which is only fitting since his unusual is a semi-autobiographical story of his experiences as a literature teacher in a Parisian inner-city middle school. “The Class” is telling a legend, yet it often feels as authentic as a documentary, not impartial because the actors are incredibly convincing, but also because it has been stripped of old cinematic embellishments. There are no special effects or define camera tricks. There isn’t even a basic musical find. There are honest the actors and the classroom location, and we’re watching the events naturally unfold.

I suspect most Western audiences will retort to this movie, despite the fact that it takes set in France. It tackles issues many students and teachers will gain relatable, not the least of which is the sense that bridging the gap between student and teacher is sometimes impossible. Marin starts the semester with the hope that he will connect with his multiracial students, who live in urban areas and near from lower income families. But as time goes on, he slowly realizes that they don’t want to connect with him. I got the sense that neither side was able to observe the opposing point of view; Marin has a hard time view why his students don’t want to learn, whereas the students have a hard time concept why Marin wants them to conform.

Take, for example, the fact that one of Marin’s lessons covers sentence structure, which involves highly confusing terms like “bad predicate,” or something along those lines. The students buy none of this in, but when you cessation and mediate about it, does anyone? In the gargantuan draw of things, diagramming a sentence hardly seems like a distinguished skill … unless, of course, you’re planning on becoming a linguistics professor. It’s not that Marin’s students are stupid–they unbiased don’t recognize what the point is. Besides, it’s not as if society wants them to be anything more than what they project; it seems that when you’re automatically written off as a terrible kid, there’s small point in trying to be something else.

Mind you, none of this is directly stated. This movie is more alive to in implications, which is to say that we have no true view why there’s such a disassociation between the students and the faculty. All we know is that it exists, and neither side knows how to fabricate the other understand where they’re coming from. And then there’s the fact that most of the faculty noxious disciplinary decisions on statistical facts, and whenever a student faces a behavioral committee, they hear only generic spiels about how he or she isn’t living up to his or her potential. This isn’t quite the procedure Marin works; he bases disciplinary decisions more on emotion, which ultimately does more to hurt his reputation than improve it.

There’s a captivating sense of camaraderie amongst the students, as if they all fragment the concept that teachers are the enemy. One of the most troublesome is Souleymane (Franck Kieta), the son of Mali immigrants with a bit of an infuriate management dilemma. There are also Esmeralda (Esmeralda Ouertani), who’s of Middle Eastern descent and never feels valued by Marin, and Khoumba (Rachel Regulier), whose attitude seems to have soured since the last semester; honest as intelligent as they are morose, both girls seem to know unbiased how to exhaust Marin’s less conservative teaching methods against him. The only distant character is Wei (Wei Huang), the brainy son of Chinese immigrants. We don’t learn worthy about him, although we suspect that his scholastic achievements are influenced more by duty than by a need to indicate himself.

One of the best achievements of “The Class” is making us feel like we know the characters, and this is despite the fact that personal details are mostly kept hidden. We know, for example, that Marin is approachable as a human being, and he gets along fair elegant with the rest of the faculty, many of who are objective as frustrated by their students as he is. But when it comes to being a mentor, something is seriously lacking; he can “snort” in the strictest sense of the word, but that doesn’t mean his students are actually learning anything.

Funny and romantic, sweet and charming, an unlikely but brillantly witty leading lady and the beauty of Ireland combine to form this itsy-bitsy film a definate keeper! This one very great reminds me of those incredible romantic screwball comedies of the 30’s and 40’s.

Marci Tizard(Janeane Garofalo) is sent on on assignment by her boss, a Senator from Boston Mass, who is in dire need of some succor getting re-elected. The assignment…to rep the Senator McGlory’s relatives in a dinky Brigadoonesque village in Ireland. Marci lands smack dab in the middle of a matchmaking festival and must ward off suitors in her quest to collect the senator’s roots. The towns people are charming but quirky, and there is one in particular that gets under Marci’s skin. A cynical ex-journalist(David O’Hara) matches wits with her and it’s a match made in heaven(or Ireland) .

Also starring is the improbable Milo O’Shea as “The Matchmaker”, who cleverly tries to bring these two together. The laughs are non finish and will leave you smiling for some time afterwards. It was directed by Notice Joffe and has a terrific atmospheric soundtrack as well.

There are a couple editions of this DVD and the one I am reviewing has a describe of Janeane Garofalo with the pleasing hills of Ireland in the background and it is in the middle of a white building. Milo O’shea is standing on the ground, the title is is red with a clover in the name. I narrate it in detail because the tech info here differs on some aspects. The studio of production is Universal (not USA) . The film which was shot on situation in pleasing Ireland has been given a resplendent transfer and may be viewed in widescreen(2.35:1) or the standard format. Profitable surround sound in DD5.1 lets you hear every detail. There’s not alot in the map of extras, but there are some cast bios and filmographies and Closed Captioning in English as well as subtitles in French and Spanish and some theatrical trailers.

The film is rated R for some langauge.

I worship this movie! The scenery is breathtaking, the acting is first rate, and the anecdote is charming. This movie transports you to Ireland. The fictional village of Bali Na Gragh (sp? ) is overcast yet welcoming, and the people all eye loyal (not like extras on a Hollywood space) . It is refreshing to gather a romantic comedy that does not steal spot in an urban landscape. You won’t gather any Mystic Tanned lads or lasses here! Janeane Garafolo is gorgeously pale, and looks like a steady woman. Her acting here is first rate, as usual. After watching the movie 8 times, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Marcy. Her “match”, Sean, played by David O’Hara is one of my celebrated male movie characters ever. He is a charming, quick-witted cad with a heart of gold. O’Hara is definately not a Brad Pitt or Ben Affleck (thank God!), but man is he sexy! It’s about time a romantic comedy has a male lead that isn’t prettier than his female costar. The matchmaker, played by Milo O’Shea is the glue that holds this terrific record together. O’Shea’s narration throughout the film is hilarious. All the supporting cast is qualified, although I don’t understand why Denis Leary gets top billing in this film (after Garafolo) . His portion was very exiguous, only somewhat pivotal, and could have been played by anyone. The movie follows Marcy to Ireland as she searches for Senator John McGlory’s Irish roots. She happens to reach during the matchmaking festival and meets Sean, who thoroughly irritates her. You can guess what happens next. I usually detest romantic comedies. Any Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks combo makes me urge for the hills! If you are like me, leer The Matchmaker. If the quirky, realistic tale doesn’t endear you, the soundtrack will! In fact, my ONLY complaint about The Matchmaker is that the soundtrack is not available. Do not miss this movie! It is probably sitting on the bargain shelf at your local video store, beacause not enough people know about it, or they are lacking taste. Step away from Sleepless in Seattle!! Give The Matchmaker a chance.

This last season of Wonder Woman continued the Extraordinary Amazon’s adventures in 1970’s America. 22 episodes comprise the 1978-79 season.

Notable episodes include “My Teenage Idol is missing” where Wonder Woman helps to crack the kidnapping-switching of a teenage singing idol with an impostor, while “Formicida” has Wonder Woman go against another well-organized powered woman who takes nature preservation to uncertain extremes through her insect control: bugs are being dispatched to close the invent of a deadly pesticide because this person does not acquire the pesticide is safe for the Earth. This latter villian is different from some of the other people Wonder Woman has faced because first-rate initial intentions only became warped through extremes.

Wonder Woman also faces a similar ethical hiss in “The man who could not die” because she must set a newly-invincible man from being captured and exploited by hazardous groups. Having superpowers ultimately does not mean powerful if you are then vulnerable to exploitation from being a public (and ‘everyday’) citizen. Her secret identity as “Diana Prince” might be all that keeps Wonder Woman from facing similar trouble.

“A date with doomsday” eerily foreshadows the then-upcoming AIDS pandemic. Wonder Woman must prevent a virus from spreading around the globe. The all-critical station gain being this deadly virus was first created in a laboratory and the HIV virus is rumored to have been created in similar conditions. I wonder if anybody in this series’s scripting department knew anybody affected with what became HIV when this was written?

Unlike a lot of other shows past and expose, the series production team knew when to extinguish the present lest their product become feeble. The diving suit was wintry, but the wonder skate and bike suits were pushing sci-fi fantasy into 1960’s camp absurdity. I mourned the series cancellation as a young girl, but now understand the wisdom of the television executive decision, Wonder Woman is now timeless for countless generations because somebody knew when to say `enough’.

There’s some playing around with the theme song (adopting a disco influence) but the overall pop culture influence on this series is tolerable and certainly not as terrible as it could have gotten (even the “Disco Devil” is a slash above other disco-themed series episodes in this era unbiased because Carter is a respectable actress period) . Of her second suits, I reflect the wetsuit kicks ass.

Special guest stars this season include Leif Garret, Roddy McDowell, Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark. Special features include star Carter’s hold commentary on the enduring power of Wonder Woman and her singing (in an episode) . When some other celebrities are disapprove to continue being associated with their signature role, Carter’s ongoing warmth to the fans and continued enthusiasm for all things Wonder Woman is really admirable.

I am also thankful that the studios have thoughtfully kept the sign of the DVD place down around 20 dollars. I can pass on the Shazzam series (one episode is included on a special bonus disc), but having all seasons of Wonder Woman is a mandate from Paradise Island.

Considering how difficult it is to acquire Wonder Woman reruns on TV, the incomplete DVD release region of some other 70’s series (Charlies Angels…etc) and the arm-leg cost of other TV seasons on DVD, this assume is definitely worth it.

I somehow stumbled across this at my local Best Capture on May 11, 2009. To the best of my knowledge, it wasn’t supposed to be released outside of rifftrax.com for another month. Naturally, I grabbed it rapidly.

The comedy of Mike, Kevin, and Bill is solid as expected. Some of the jokes are the word-for-word sincere same as in the earlier version from Account Films, featuring only Mike Nelson’s comedy track. In this version, however, the delivery of those lines is shared by Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Luckily, there is some recent material mixed in that offsets the repeats. If you’ve never seen the previous version, you won’t even peep.

I only had two exact technical issues with this DVD. Firstly, the menu conceal ran once and then stopped instead of looping serve to the open. This meant that I had to commence the entire DVD all over again. Secondly, the video was choppy in parts. The audio ran without snort, but some parts of the film seemed to be skipping video frames. I am not sure if this was an relate with all copies of this DVD or if it’s specific to my player.

All in all, it’s luscious and humorous, a valid occupy for any fan of Rifftrax, Mystery Science Theater 3000, or Cinematic Immense.

This obsolete dismal and white movie was cheaply made but became a Cult Hit shock scare film that started the Flesh-Eating Zombie movie craze. The old-fashioned MST3K crew of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett retract it on with quite a few humorous riffs. Some don’t quite hit the residence, and the guys miss some choice moments to riff, but that’s always the case with Rifftrax. One of the better ones was, “A Zombie’s Worst enemy, a Clothesline.” The clueless young couple who try to race the zombies and the ultra-Angry family man regain lots of attention. Rifftrax does not include dilapidated MST3K things like skits, sets, or the Bots. You never Inspect the guys in any manufacture. You simply HEAR them from the beginning to the slay of the movie. Not even an Intro!

I also recommend Rifftrax “House on Troubled Hill.” It’s terrific.

1981 was The Year of the Werewolves…the furry fiends leaped onto movie screens in three major films: “The Howling,” “Wolfen,” and the classic of the genre, “An American Werewolf in London.” There has never been a greater werewolf film, there has never been a better transformation scene, and few anxiety movies can match the appealing mixture of humor and scares that writer/direction John Landis (”Animal House,” “The Blues Brothers”) achieved here.

Although there had been humor in fright films before this movie, “An American Werewolf in London” showed once and for all that having comedy in a anxiety film didn’t mean that the film would lose out in the dismay department. Landis makes it definite that the film is NOT a comedy — the terror scenes are carried with dead-seriousness and unpleasant impact — but there is so powerful quirky humor surrounding these scenes that the film becomes incredibly likable and buoyant. Most of the laughs approach from seeing the musty movie werewolf premise dropped into the unique day and watching the characters try to deal with it.

Actors Griffin Dunne and David Naughton, neither of whom had been in a movie before, obtain a fabulous ‘ordinary guy’ feeling to their characters of two young American boys backpacking through Europe. In rural England, they have a immoral encounter with a legendary monster, and Naughton faces the consequences of being bitten when he returns to London and takes up living with a magnificent nurse (Jenny Agutter) .

The transformation scene is justly noted and a milestone in visual effects. Make-up wizard Rick Baker lets the viewers sight a real-time twisting of a human body into a wolf shape: limbs stretch, snouts pop, hair grows, the body contorts…it’s improbable to explore. (And on DVD, you can spy it over and over and over again) . Even computer graphics can’t do an do as startling as this one.

This DVD offers some nice extras. The image is satisfactory, and the 5.1 Surround Sound is decent (although there’s not a lot of benefit speaker sound) . Actors Naughton and Dunne do feature commentary on the film, and provide some lively information and sound as if they were having a ample time reliving the experience. I wish that Landis had been on the commentary as well, but you can hear his thoughts on the film in an 18-minute interview. Landis is an absolute hoot to listen to; the guy is as silly as his movie, and he absolutely bursts with ideas and observations. To go along with the Landis interview is an 11-minute interview with make-up maestro Rick Baker. He provides a engrossing seek at crafting what he calls “the coolest werewolf film ever made.” Also included is a vintage featurette on the making of the film, although it’s only about five minutes long (but you come by more of wise-cracking John Landis), ten minutes of archival footage of Baker making a cast of David Naughton’s hand, and an assortment of storyboards, outtakes, and production photos.

“An American Werewolf in London” is a major turning point in panic films and visual effects — and even over twenty years later, it is smooth one of the most engrossing movies of its decade. It hasn’t customary at all, and this DVD lets you experience it the arrangement it should be seen (and in the company of wild-man John Landis!)

This is one of the few movies that have consistently given me nightmares since I was a child. It is at least a decade ahead of its time. Most of the negative criticisms that I have read exercise the word “uneven” a lot. Even Roger Ebert, whom I love, claimed that the humor and the dismay were an uneasy mix. This was years before he gave the movie Bawl a obvious review. Now I LIKE the movie Weep, but there is no draw that one can claim that it gets the balance upright whereas Werewolf gets it detestable. Bellow simply benefits from occurring in the cynical nineties – Werewolf suffers from being avant guard. .

The original DVD has a few beneficial extras on it – especially a novel interview with Landis. Even after all these years, the film unruffled holds up. Unlike most films, I seek more things in it the more I search for. What, for instance, is up with the townsfolk of East Proctor and what is their relationship with the current werewolf? My guess – they brought it on themselves somehow. Maybe one of their beget ran over a gypsy and was cursed. Instead of killing the bloke, they all resolve to shroud beneath the pentangle in The Slaughtered Lamb every rotund moon.

I am recently returned from England and this movie is listed in Fodor’s as one of the films that best showcases London. I heartily agree. I visited the corrupt tube end at Tottenham Court Road and it smooth looks great the same as when the David made his slay there. And as I walked, alone in the countryside, beneath the light of the beefy moon, I had to ask myself, “Am I crazy? ” Fortunately, I made it to the pub. There I waited, beneath the pentangle, for my friends to coast me home.

For a few years, it was hard to fetch a decent DVD copy of this film. The Anchor Bay version had been long out of print and could only be obtained from private sellers at a ridiculous mark. I never saw the 1998 Anchor Bay version but heard it was a nice release. The 2004 edition from Alliance Atlantis (or Echo Bridge Home Entertainment) where the cloak art displays a knife blade with Jaime Lee Curtis’ face reflected was a dispicable release in every map. It was like watching a old VHS copy with abominable represent and sound quality and that is not why DVD’s evolved. The companies releasing these films should have to pass some sort of inspection for DVD transfers. At last, Echo Bridge released a fresh version of Prom Night in 2007 with fancier hide art (Jaime Lee Curtis standing in the school hallway with her prom dress and tiara on holding a bouquet of flowers with a bloody ax in them) . I was very impressed with the pain that went into this as it was well done. Grand characterize quality (the scenes that were too sad to glimpse what was going on before are now visible) . Also included was a nice chapter menu and more chapter stops (the previous release only had 5 chapter stops and a terrible looking menu) . If you are a fan of eighties slashers, this version needs to be in your collection beside Alarm Notify and Halloween. A nice scramble scene with Eddie Benton in this film is also worth savoring. What to recommend is the Australian thriller Road Games featuring Jaime Lee Curtis that many people may have missed. For the genre, I give Prom Night 4 stars. I really liked this one. There was something about the Canadian awe films that made them stand out (Shaded Christmas and Elated Birthday to Me were some others) . Another Canadian dismay gem I’m collected waiting patiently for is Curtains which has unfortunately not seen the light of day on DVD yet.

I’m a slack bloomer on this one. I never saw it until tonight – don’t know how that happened. I like the horror/slasher movies from the leisurely 70’s mid-80’s. This killed me! Halloween meets Carrie meets Saturday Night Fever. An escaped luntic, the police race, disco-disco (satisfactory music BTW) and a prom with two conniving students all add up to a lot of fun. Not enormous, not overly scary, but a trusty hoot!
